Head Coach – Kevin Wright
I grew up in Milwaukie, OR and attended Rex Putnam HS. When I graduated in 1985 I went to Northwest Nazarene College for 2 years and ran track there. I transferred to Western Oregon State College so I could run both track and cross country there. I held the 10,000m school record at both colleges for a while; both have been significantly lowered since I left. I am currently sitting in the #5 all time spot at Western Oregon (no clue where I am on the NNC list)
In 1989 I married Danelle (see her bio below) and we have 2 daughters – Amanda a graduate of Western Oregon University and Brianne who is graduate of Whitworth University in Spokane – Both are Capital HS graduates and 4 year members of the track and cross country programs.
2015 will mark my 25th year at Capital HS. I started in 1991 as a volunteer, became a paid coach in 1992 and the women’s head coach in 1999. I have also been the head women’s track coach since 1998.
In my spare time I am the PA announcer for the Football and Men’s and women’s basketball teams and mentor 3 FTC robotics teams here at Capital HS.
Assistant Coach – Danelle Wright
I grew up in Klamath Falls, OR, where I was a member of the track and cross country teams at Henley High School. After high school, I attended Western Oregon State College, where I earned a BS in Elementary Ed and ran cross country and track for a couple of years. While there, I met and married my Mr. Wright, also a member of the team. I have never held a school record, but I did get to run at Nationals.
After college, we moved to Olympia, and started setting down roots. This fall begins my 16th year at Evergreen Christian School, where I teach middle school math. I also coached cross country track for many years for ECS. I joined the CHS coaching staff during the 2010 season. Looking forward to another amazing season!
The Capital High school women have a fine tradition in XC. We have been to the state meet as a team 24 times since the school opened in 1975. We have been to state every year since 2000, (15 straight years) which is the 2nd longest streak of any women’s team in the state and only 1 year away from tying the state record for a public school (16 in a row by South Kitsap HS). We have also won 2 academic state championships (highest team GPA) in the last 5 years. We have a current 9-year streak of being undefeated league champions stretched across 3 different leagues.
We are a very team oriented program, and we are excited to have anyone turn out for the team, and feel that everyone contributes something to our team. We work very hard but try to have fun and improve along the way.
