State wrap up

2013 will go down in the record books for Capital HS girls Track and Field.

This was one of the bigger groups of girls that have gone to state since I have been the head coach. While we have had bigger groups we have not come home with as much success as we did this year.

When you go to state there are a number of goals that different athletes can set:
1. Win your event – come home a state champion – only a few people can realistically set this goal.
2. Get on the podium – Clearly more people can achieve this goal
3. Get a PR
4. Beat your seed coming into the event

ALL of our girls meet at least one of these goals

the 4×200 came in seeded 16th and fought hard and ran right at a PR time for themselves

Camiele was seeded 16th in the 300 Hurdles and finished 14th, and then in the Triple jump she had her best series ever having I think 5 Jumps over 34′ and set a new PR of 34-10.5 solidifying her to #4 all time and #3 on the Junior List – this was the 5th time (4th Girl) that someone has placed in the Triple jump.

Payton had an outstanding race in the 800m prelims to put herself into finals. It was probably the smartest race I have ever seen her race. In finals she ran to a 7th place finish at 2:21.64 which puts her into #4 all time and #2 on the sophomore list. And she is the third girl to place in the 800 She beat her seed in this race by 3 or 4 spots coming in.

Christine had a great race in the 3200 setting a new PR of 11:34.34 putting her at #6 all time and #3 on the senior list in the 3200. Not bad for a girl who ran 12:31 last year and didn’t even make it to Districts!! :57 in one year is an AMAZING improvement!! and then getting 7th at state just .2 from 6th!! Such a gutsy race! She became the 4th person (but been done 7 times) to place in the 3200.

Which brings us to . .

Lauren beat her Seed AND set a PR in the 1600 to place 8th – Her time makes her #6 all time, and #3 in the Sophomore list, and she is just the 3rd girl ever to place in the 1600m. Then she comes back 2 days later and, as the theme goes, runs a VERY tough and intelligent race to get 4th place (after being seeded 8th coming in) and she was the 3rd girl to place in the 3200 and only the 2nd girl to place in the 1600 and 3200 in the same year.

As a team we set a record of 5 trips to the Podium for Capital HS and EVERY individual that we took won a medal, which is pretty incredible. In 1997 we got 4 people on the stand but I believe we had a relay team that placed twice for 6 team trips to the podium for that year. So we got more individuals but not as many total trips

NEXT year I think we can break that mark!!! Just sayin’ ladies ;) I hope you believe!! because I know the coaches do!!!

2 reminders and District update

1. Tomorrow Sunday May 19th we need a bunch of help at the marathon – Remember this is our fundraiser – you can come in one of 2 shifts. 8-10 am or 10-12. If you can’t come either one then show up at 12 and help take down/clean up. Just show up at Sylvester park downtown and find the big white tent with our team in it :)

2. MONDAY May 20th 5:30 team BANQUET - in the commons, Please, Please, PLEASE spread the word and bring some food to share with the group. We will start awards as soon as people get a chance to eat! Hopefully we will see everyone there!

DISTRICT MEET HIGHLIGHTS

First off – this was a great day for the team – started off really crazy when our bus shows up 30 min after we wanted it.

The weather there wasn’t great but it could have been much worse, but here we go . . .

The first completed event was probably the most dramatic for our team – the 4×200 – Laurel, Haley, Stef, and Carolina all Ran GREAT!!! it was literally coming down to inches for who was going to go to state and who was staying home (3rd and 4th place) but Carolina ran a super tough leg and intimidated the Hockinson runner so much that the other girl just fell down right before the finish line and we secured that 3rd place spot and moved onto the state meet!!

Anna Belford hit another PR in the Pole Vault!!! Moving her up to a tie for #3 all time in Capital’s history the highest that any of our athletes have hit this year. It also puts her at #2 on the Senior list.

In the Discus – Haley V. didn’t have the day she wanted finishing just a little short of what it would take to get her to state, but more than made up for it in the Shot put with a throw of 31-7.5″ which was a HUGE PR – that’s 2 1/2 FEET farther than she threw last week which was her PR, and moved herself onto the all time list at #16!!

In the 800, after all boxing match the race was last week, Payton decided to just take the race out so that there was nobody sticking around at the end. She was able to break on girl but unfortunately one of the girls was able to match her but Payton finished #2 with a great time and earning her first individual spot to state next week.

The 1600 was a VERY competitive event with many girls from around the district running nice PR’s. Lauren was able to control the race and finish a very strong 2nd place - Christine ran a PR but finished 4th just out of a place for state. Hannah ran a very solid race just missing a PR

the 3200 top 3 spots were decided very early when Lauren and Christine took control about a mile into the race and they ran a great race getting 2nd and 3rd both earning a spot at the state meet – Christine pulled in ANOTHER PR. (the only girl to PR in 2 individual events in this meet). Nicole picked up 4th in a great finish

Camiele had a busy last part of the meet – she Triple jumped and qualified for Finals then checked out and ran a season best in the 300 hurdles – came back to the triple jump in 4th (one out of qualifying for state) and on her last jump – increased her mark by almost 2′ jumping a new PR of 34’6″ and grabbing a spot to state in her 2nd event of the day. As soon as she was done she had to go get ready for the . . .

4×400 – where all 4 girls ran an amazingly strong race! Stef, Kim, Camiele and Payton took 2 full seconds off of the time they ran last week with everyone running their best time of the year or with in .3 of their best. unfortunately we came up 4th one out of qualifying for state. but it was a spectacular time.

the Javelin was a great event for us as well. Lisa C. got into the meet literally 24 hours before it started when another competitor had to pull out of the meet. So she went in seeded 12th, she was sooo excited to be there she hit a PR of 10 feet yes 10!!!! both she and Drew were able to make finals with strong showings.

another late entry due to a scratch was Carolina in the Triple – who had to go over when we found out DURING THE meet that she was going to have to triple. She had a very fine jump, especially since we didn’t know she was going to have to do it.

I also do have to point out that as a team we were 2nd!!!! yes 2nd!! We had a great day and Black Hills had some tough breaks and we ended up beating them by 18 points!!! Tumwater won as expected – congrats to them!

If I did my checking correctly here is who we have going to state.

4×200 – Laurel, Haley, Stef, Carolina, Camiele, Kim
800 – Payton
1600 – Lauren
3200 – Christine, Lauren
300H – Camiele
Triple – Camiele

Alternates for State:
Shot- Haley
1600- Christine
3200- Nicole

League meet

So with the finish we had at the meet on Friday- we confirmed our 2nd place in league status – not bad for a team predicted to finish 4th/5th by the coaches at the beginning of the season.

I really appreciate everyone trying to keep me informed on how the meet was going and supporting me being gone. (Amanda ran well ).

Anyway- Tyler was kind enough to to send me some notes to put up so here they are:

1) girls relays had 2 huge PR’s – congrats Haley, Stef, Laurel, Carolina, Camiele, Kim and Payton
2) the pole vault girls had a fantastic day with season bests, encouraging each other, and some surprise points at league
3) Laurel, Drew, and Carolina did a great job balancing multiple events at the beginning of the meet and being aware of the flow of the meet.
4) thanks to all the girls for staying for most of the meet to watch their teammates and for being responsible in checking out with their parents at the end
5) Payton on finishing a great race after getting punched in the chest by a freshman
6) our jumpers in fighting thru the heat and the strangest runways we’ve seen all year
7) Camiele with a gigantic season best and one hurdle away from being league champ
8) everyone for working hard last week and preparing themselves to be great yesterday. Let’s do it again!

The district championships are next week at Washougal HS – according to google maps it will be a 2 hour and 10 min bus ride :) I will post confirmed entries as soon as I know them.

Freshman invite results!

This is always a crazy day, because you never know what is supposed to happen.

Well, what happened is that our girls had 13 PR’s today – Yes 13!!!

Laurel – set PR’s in both the 100 and 200 today AND brought home a 2nd place finish in the 100.

Galen also had a solid PR in the 100

Tessa did the long jump today for the first time and had a spectacular mark of over 12′ – which prompted Melissa to ask me why I did not have her long jumping all year!!

In the 400 – Rachel K – had a GREAT run lowering her PR by 4 full seconds!!!! and Jessica ran a very tough 400 as well for her first one of the season

the 300 hurdles – the event of the day – ALL our athletes who competed got a new PR. Nancy, Tessa, Macy and Preethi all posted Pr’s in impressive fashion.

100H – Tessa again set a PR – becoming the only girl today to PR in EVERY event she did (I think)

Last but not Least - Josie came back today (on a very hot day for Distance runners) and posted a fine 1600 and a PR in the 800!!

While I didn’t get to talk too much to all the athletes because I was busy fixing the start line! It was really fun to watch all the girls performing VERY well and also having a GREAT time together!!

Shaner – wow, just WOW!

We had 10 season or personal bests tonight!! and we competed SOOOO well tonight. Her are the highlights

1. 4×200 relay Laurel, Haley, Stefanie, and Carolina lowered our season best time by 4 full seconds tonight – it was spectacular!

2. Carolina came back to the Triple jump and set a lifetime PR of OVER 1 foot!! Amazing! She also put herself at #22 all time at Capital!

3. 4×100 relay Laurel, Haley, Stefanie, and Carolina – again lowered our season best of .6 seconds

4/5. Eliza and Lauren both had a good day in the 1600. Eliza had a season best and is closing in on a lifetime PR. Lauren had a HUGE pr of just under10 seconds. Running 5:18.86 moving her to #6 all- time and #3 sophomore in the history of Capital.

6/7. In the 800, Eliza and Payton both were spectacular. Eliza had a 5 sec Lifetime PR in the 800 tonight, not to be outdone Payton had a 4.2 sec PR moving her #5 all time just .4 away from 4th and #2 Sophomore

8/9 Nicole and Hannah both had a great run in the 3200 – Nicole had a season best of 26 seconds and Hannah had a lifetime best of 5 seconds – moving herself up to #10 junior spot all time

10. The 4×400 of Camiele, Kim, Nicole and Payton – lowered our season best by just a few tenths. BUT Nicole had to fill in and run right after her 3200 and STILL had a good run. The other 3 all had their best splits of the season!!!

Others that were close to (or tied PR’s tonight) Hansi, Anna, and Leika were all right at their PR’s in the PV.
Drew in the High jump and Bailey in the Shot put.

It was really fun for me to watch everyone step up and really compete tonight – keep up the great work ladies!!
