League day 1

I love this day every year J we always have a few girls who never thought they would get to here and other girls who are hoping to win it all.  The joy on the faces as they qualify is why I continue to love this.  This year makes me look back to 4 years ago when my daughter Brianne qualified as a senior for her first and only district track meet in the 3200.  Now 4 years later I am going to miss the 2nd day of the league meet to get to see Brianne graduate from Whitworth University.  While I am sorry I will miss the meet it is going to be a great time to be with Brianne and family celebrating – and I will say I will be VERY disappointed if I don’t get updates from everyone on how the meet is going.

Anyway…..  This meet started and ended VERY strong for us.  I was HOPING for 40 or 42 points at the end of the first day we currently have 47 and are in a STRONG 3rd place giving the favorites, Wilson and Central Kitsap, a run for their money.  As you read – Remember that athletes in the top 6 places all move on to districts next week.

Our first event of the day was the 100h which saw Hannah F. in the 5-6th place range about half way but to see her keep her calm and have excellent form and effort to finish 3rd with a new PR – our first qualifier.

Next we had the 100 which saw Haley, who was seeded 8th finish 4th in that heat in a new PR time.  In the 2nd heat Taylor, who was seeded 9th overall, win the heat and place 5th overall, also in a new PR time.  Just .04 sec separated 3rd and 7th place in this meet.

The 4×100 relay of Laurel, Haley, Kaily, and Taylor had a .39 PR which is huge for this time of year and the fact that the hand offs where not that great overall. They finished 5th beating their seed by a place

In the 1600 we saw 4 nice performances – Aven and Rachel both finished their seasons with PR’s and Naomi (4th) and Lauren (2nd) ran the races they needed to move onto the district meet next week.

The field events were a great spot for us at this meet.  First off we had Carolina who became our first league champion in the pole vault with a jump of 9-0.

The triple jump was strong for us.  We came into the meet seeded 6th, 12th and 15th but finished with Hannah C in 4th, Kelsey in 11th, and Hannah W finished.  All 3 girls beat their seeds and set new PR’s. Hannah C was over a 1’ PR.

The last event of the day gave us the biggest PR of the day.  Janessa improved her PR by 4’10” Yes almost 5 feet – so huge on the last day of your season!!

So proud of all the girls that competed today – and proud to call myself their coach.  They are good athletes, fierce competitors and even better, great people.  We have another day of great competition on Saturday @Shelton HS for day 2 of the meet and I am positive we will have MANY positive things to report after this as well.

Last regular week Re-Cap

It was a good last week of the regular season :)

We started at the SS Championships at NT – We had a number of good showings.

It was exciting to see Paris get to race her first race of the season after finally getting over a  quad injury. She had a very nice showing in both the 100 and the 200.

Morgon had a great 400 running a very nice PR.

In the 800 Rachel – Inanna – Maria – Skyler and Galen all had a great race.

For field events Tia had a great discus throw with a nice PR and McKenzie and Elise  also had a nice improvement in the Javelin,

For many of our athletes this was the last meet and it was great to see them out giving their all even if it wasn’t the best mark of the year for them.

Next up was the Shaner Invite:  This was a great outing for us – MANY PR’s this evening – this is a great meet for us every year, and this year was no different.  We started the meet with a HUGE PR in the 4×200 relay.  We took almost 4 full seconds off of their previous season best making us the #2 seed in the Narrows league right now.  Soon after Hannah broke 18 sec for the first time in the hurdles and right after that we got our first WIN of the night as Lauren powered her way into a win in the 1600 with a solid season best time!!!

Our BIG news game in the field events – Bailey had a HUGE PR in the shot put which had her so excited I think she might have been able to HJ well over 5′ :)  Then across the stadium – Literally as far away from the shot as possible – Carolina continued her assault on the Pole vault record books – She had a 1′ PR on Friday which puts her as #2 all-time in the Capital record book.

As we progressed through the night we had many more great races and some PR’s – Payton held off a huge attack on the final straight away to win the 800m for the 2nd year in a row!  My happy moment came in the 4×400 we needed an alternate but I hadn’t asked someone to come – Hannah C. was there and volunteered to run it – HER FIRST 400 EVER. and allowed the team to compete and they RAN AMZING – all the girls had a great race, Taylor led off the team in a season best time (by a bunch) and Kim and Ellie followed with great efforts.  Hannah brought the baton home with a tremendous effort, without of which, none of the girls would have been able to compete.  Always makes me feel great about our team when someone steps up for their team mates.

Frosh Invite was a HOT day – which brought many great efforts – Capital Made MANY trips to the award stands with a few PR’s along the way – All the girls competed very well – We came away with 2 first place finishes – Naomi in the 3200 and the 4×400 team of Taylor – Tia – Kelsey – and Ellie – We also saw Sophia with a HUGE PR in the Javelin and for the 2nd time in 24hours I was wondering if I should have my throwers High Jumping after they PR – It was fun watching her sprint across the first – sprint back to get her Javelin and then sprint across the field again to go tell her friends!!!

Next up is the League Championships -If you know you are done competing for the season PLEASE return your uniform AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!

Shelton Invite

Shelton Invite:

All in all a good day today J

We didn’t have a lot of girls compete but they did a nice job.

We got started right away with Carolina, Bailey and Lauren all competing right off the bat.  Carolina had a solid vault equaling her 8’6” PR in the Vault. Bailey had a solid day that wasn’t quite a PR but a good day nonetheless.  Lauren had a great day until her legs cramped up with about 900 meters to go in the 2 mile.

In the 100’s both Haley and Taylor had to run into a head wind and the times didn’t show how well they competed in this event today.  Some days you just can’t catch a break on the weather.  It’s great weather and then you get a head wind L

Next up was the 1600 – While Naomi got bounced around a bit at the start she didn’t let it get in her head.  She ran a very great race.  At the 800m mark she was about 8th out of 16.  From there on she just kept moving and moving – When the final lap rolled around she was 4th and by the 200 mark she was challenging for the lead.  Once she took the lead she never looked back and won the race going away.  It was a tremendous race that netted 6 second PR.  Her time puts her as the #4 freshman and #10 all time on the 1600m time – Even though it was a full mile (1609m) as compared to the normal 1600.

The wind picked back up for the 300 hurdles but that didn’t stop Kim from having another great race – She broke 50 seconds for the first time on Thursday and did it again today – it would have been a PR had the wind not affected her approaching the hurdles off the corner – it was still a very nice race and her 2nd fastest time ever.

The 800 was the only race of the day where we had 2 girls running.  In the first heat Payton ran a nice strategic race getting 2nd overall in a season best time.  In the 2nd heat Aven also ran very well and showed that she is also learning how to be a great racer.  She was very competitive all the way through and had a very nice closing finish racing herself to a 4.5 second PR on the day taking a big jump towards her personal goal for the season.

Last but not least on the day was Haley who waited around all day as an Alternate just to find out Literally at the last minute that she got into the 200.  All the way out in lane 8 she ran a season best time and her 2nd best time ever. She took a strong .2 off of that 200m time and is looking strong for the end of the season push. With the time Haley has moved up to the #4 Senior of all time.

I will be posting more information about the meets that we have remaining very soon.  And remember our end of season banquet is May 27th in the commons.

Olympia – Timberline @Capital

So excited for how today went  – Many great things about today.  I want to start at the end of the day and say thank you to all the seniors for all you have done for our program in the 1,2,3, or 4 years that you have been here.  I could never say enough about how I appreciate what you have brought to our program.

Also thank you to the athletes and parents who stayed around and helped us honor our seniors.

On to the meet, we had 27 bests today.  Another great total!!  We have a few girls try new events today with great success.

Gonna start with the field events today.

Bailey finished her senior year undefeated in the narrows league in the shot put.  While there are some girls that have thrown farther, Bailey came out on top in the head to head meetings.    Janessa got another PR today actually improving by just under a foot!!

In the Javelin it seems like every week we have a big PR or 2. Today Sophia and Annie each had a 4-foot PR today!!!!  Sophie moves herself up the ranks of the Javelin and is closing in on snagging a league championship spot. As of now she ranks #6 on the freshman list and 24 all time.

We had 2 PR’s in the jumps today – Faith in the Long jump and Kelsey in the Triple, who had a great effort considering she had to run the 400 right in the middle of the event.

On the track today we had some amazing efforts- Kaily after being sick most the season took another .3 sec off of her 100 time and .4 off of her 200 time. Not to be out done Stephanie ran a .4 PR in the 100 but a HUGE 1.5 PR in the 200.

In the 100 both Tanna and Camra ran to new personal bests and in the 200 we also had Hannah C, and Morgan with PR’s.

In the 800 Payton ran a nice season best and Naomi ran to a PR which makes her 25 overall and the #7 freshman getting her on all the distance lists as a freshman, very few athletes can say that!!!!!!

The 1600 some great competitions with Rachel – Innana- Maria- Makenzie-Hanan and Skyler all getting PR’s – Skyler hit her season goal for breaking 7:00 today.

The hurdles were also fun today – in the 100’s Hannah ran a nice PR which ties her for #2 in the league and in the 300’s Kim broke 50 sec for the first time and Torie followed last weeks great race with another PR today and Ellie tried the 300’s for the first time and might have earned herself a trip to league.

Both of our relays showed GREAT today even though both the 4×100 and the 4×400 have new people in them.  Speaking of the 4×100 we had a special event happen in the relay today.  Kim Farrar became the first girl since I have been coaching 1991 to compete in EVERY single running event on the track.  After being a distance runner as an underclassmen and turning sprinter/hurdler the last few years.  Not only did she run them but also she ran all of them well!!!

Next up:

Shelton Invite on Saturday – We have Haley, Taylor, Kim, Payton, Aven, Naomi, Lauren, Carolina and Bailey have all qualified to compete in some very excellent competitions.

I will send out more information about our meets next week

LASTLY – Our team end of season Banquet is scheduled for Wednesday May 27 in the commons.  Please put it on your calendar.
